Cash van bombed outside Pretoria, unknown amount of money stolen

“They did not even give them a chance to get away from the vehicle before bombing it."

Police are investigating a cash-in-transit robbery in Kgabalatsane, north-west of Pretoria on Thursday afternoon.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that two guards were injured, and that one had since lost his life, while another one was in hospital.

Police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili said it was alleged that a BMW rammed a cash-in-transit bakkie, forcing it to come to a halt.

“An unknown number of suspects allegedly used explosives to gain access to the money. Two security officials were injured, reportedly from the explosion.”

Muridili said the CIT robbers fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, leaving their damaged vehicle on fire.

“It is reported that the getaway vehicles were a grey Audi, BMW and possibly a Mazda.”

The wife of one of the security officers, who cannot be named for safety reasons, said her husband was still in theatre as doctors were still trying to save his leg which was injured during the blast.

The woman told Rekord on Friday afternoon that her husband’s partner had just passed away.

“I’m very cross. My husband has been in theater since this morning around 11:00.

“They [attackers] did not even give them a chance to get away from the vehicle before bombing it. My husband’s leg was almost cut off by a piece of metal from the vehicle due to the blast. Doctors are still trying to fix his leg.”

Muridili said no arrests have been made yet, and appealled to anyone with information to call Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or send tip-offs on MySAPS.”
