Zwarries mourn beloved teacher

"He was a good fellow. He walked the straight and narrow and I’m convinced straight through the eternal gates.”

Hoërskool Zwartkop is mourning the death of their deputy-principal who died on Monday due to Covid-19.

The school shared the sad news on their Facebook page. “It is with great sadness to inform you of the death of Kobus Vorster.

“We honour his legacy and find comfort in knowing that he is enjoying the eternal glory of our heavenly Father,” the post read.

According to the principal, Dr Dewald Strydom, the beloved teacher “lost the battle against Covid. He was positively diagnosed with the virus on 2 August and admitted to Unitas hospital the following day.”

Strydom said there had not been a high-care bed available, and so he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Krugersdorp on August 4.

“He remained there until his death in the early hours of Monday morning when his wife called to inform me.

“He taught Business Studies to the matric learners and had been at the school for the past 15 years. He previously taught at Hoërskool Montana, and worked in the private sector for a short while after he had resigned there.”

As deputy-principal he was the custodian of administration, the school grounds and buildings, Strydom said.

“Kobus Vorster was someone with a heart for education and of incorruptible character. One could always rely on him because of his steadfastness. He had sound principles which created an aura of honour and respect around him.

“His influence reaches far and will continue to live in the hearts of people. We honour his legacy.”

Vorster leaves behind his wife and two sons. No funeral arrangements or memorial services have been arranged yet.

Nico Greyling, Vorster’s brother-in-law and husband of his sister, Riekie, said they knew each other for 28 years.

“Kobus was married to Lydia, also a teacher at Hoërskool Zwartkop, and they have two sons aged 19 and 21 respectively, both of them are students at tertiary institutions. He also leaves behind another sister, Theresa.”

Tributes poured in for Vorster on the school’s Facebook page.

All school activities were cancelled when the news of his passing was received.
