Women lead the fight against crime and violation of traffic laws

The women in blue together with women of various law enforcement agencies in Tshwane commemorated the women’s month of August through embarking on a massive operation.

Sunnyside station commander Brigadier Matshidiso Kgoadi has praised the women in law enforcement agencies in the Tshwane region for opting to commemorate Women’s Month through serving Tshwane residents.

More than 90 law enforcement officers including women from the police, Tshwane metro police, Tshwane emergency services, Gauteng traffic department, Home Affairs, Department of Correctional Services and other agencies from the security cluster embarked on a massive operation on Tuesday, to restore law and order under the guidance of Kgoadi.

“I commend the women in blue as well as the women from other security agencies for their endless and selfless dedication in serving the Tshwane community and ensuring their safety at all times,” Kgoadi said.

Women’s Month is commemorated in August every year, to pay tribute to women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, protesting against the extension of pass laws to women.

Police spokesperson Constable Mandlakayise Zwane described the operation as a major success.

He said the operation saw a total of 41 illegal immigrants detained during the stop-and-search roadblock in Baviaanspoort and other areas such as Kameeldrift.

“Operational activities were conducted in the form of roadblocks, stop-and-searches, enforcement of the Gauteng liquor act, secondhand goods act, road traffic management act, as well as enforcement and adherence of the disaster management act,” said Zwane.

He said the disaster management act rules and regulations were enforced and communities were educated about the new Delta strand of Covid-19, and encouraged to always adhere to all health protocols.

A total of 367 Aarto fines to the value of R178 800 were issued, he said.

“Other successes were a recovery of a cloned VW Polo and closure of an illegal shebeen.”

Zwane said the operation was not only about arresting suspects but to also conducting road safety awareness.

He said the operation also extended to Baviaanspoort corrections centre where several unauthorised items were found and confiscated.

“Confiscated items included six cellphones, R180, five cellphone SIM cards, small amounts of dagga and private clothes.”

The operation saw a total of 930 people and 461 vehicles searched.

“All detained suspects will appear in various Pretoria magistrate’s courts.”
