Bogus cops still busy operating on the highways

Since the start of the year, more than 10 cases have been reported in Centurion where motorists were either robbed or hijacked by bogus cops.

Bogus cops are still busy on the highways, police recently warned drivers again to be wary of hijackers impersonating cops or ordinary citizens.

Since the start of the year, more than 10 cases have been reported in Centurion where motorists were either robbed or hijacked after being stopped by armed men impersonating police officers.

Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said fewer cases were being reported, but hijackings were still a problem.

“In terms of bogus cops hijackers, we haven’t received many complaints about that in our area lately, but we are still experiencing hijackings in general.”

He said one case of hijacking was reported last week, around the Lyttelton area.

“In this incident, the suspects went back to the old modus operandi where they went past the motorist and then indicated to them that there was something wrong with the vehicle or tyres. The victim then pulled over to check, and that’s how they were hijacked,” Miller said.

“Since July, there have been one or two cases reported at the station where victims were hijacked by fake cops or traffic officials, but it’s not a common tendency anymore.”

He urged motorists to keep a lookout and call the nearest police station if they were being followed or stopped.
