Staff held at gunpoint as robbers loot cellphones

Police said no arrests have been made yet as armed suspects fled with phones during an armed robbery in the east of Pretoria on Monday.

Another store in the east of Pretoria was targeted by criminals this week when armed suspects fled with several cellphones, estimated to be worth around R15 000.

This as staff and customers were held up at a Pep Home store in Moreleta Plaza on Monday.

The robbery happened soon after the store opened in the morning, according to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Duane Lightfoot.

“Six unknown men wearing balaclavas entered the store,” he said.

“Two of them had firearms. They took the cellphones and fled the scene in a white Toyota Yaris.”

Lightfoot said a case of business robbery was opened and would be investigated by Garsfontein detectives.

No arrests have been made.

He urged business owners to be vigilant and ensure their security measurements were in place and updated regularly.

Moreleta Plaza management confirmed the robbery.

“The on-site security responded but the suspects managed to get away,” their statement read.

“No shots were fired and no one was hurt.”

Only the day before on Sunday afternoon, staff members were held hostage during an armed robbery at the Déonne le Roux jewellery shop in the Woodlands Boulevard shopping complex.

A suspect linked to the robbery was killed during a high-speed car chase by police.

The suspect was declared dead on the scene and another was arrested after the car they were travelling in rolled on the R25 towards Tembisa, according to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Isaac Mculu.

He said the police would continue to search for the other four suspects involved in the armed robbery.
