Clean-up campaign at Reneilwe sports ground
“We want to make sure that we all live in a clean and healthy environment.”
Mamelodi residents are being encouraged to revamp and renew dumping sites to something that will benefit the whole community.
The Spring Day Goods Green Deeds clean-up campaign was held on Friday at the Reneilwe community learning centre sports ground.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment together with the members of Gideon’s Arms Foundation (GAF) also attended.
Thabo Mokwena from GAF said the event aimed to encourage the public to take care of their environment.
“The sports ground was an unsightly and hygienic piece of land next to Reneilwe community learning centre that was previously nothing but a dumping site and hideout for drug users,” said Mokwena.
He said they cleaned the sports ground to reuse it to keep children busy in the area with different sports activities.
“As a way of also celebrating Spring Day and Arbor week, we have planted five fruits trees to be planted at the identified houses,” said Mokwena.
Tshepiso Seabelo from the department said president Cyril Rampahosa encouraged the nation to take care of the environment and the Good Green Deeds Programme to mobilise people to act now to be a Good Samaritan for Green Deeds.
“We want to make sure that we all live in a clean and healthy environment and we encourage the public to identify public places that need to be rehabilitated,” said Seabelo.
The department donated face masks, gloves, litter pickers and refuse bags to everyone who took part in the clean-up campaign.
Other issues that were discussed on the day were career guidance by the department and social issues within the community.
Seabelo said the main aim is to promote environmental actions that take into consideration sustainable living practices.
Centre manager of Reneilwe community learning centre, Zanele Madonsela said she was happy that they cleaned the sports ground because it was no longer safe for learners.
“The sports ground was already turned into an illegal dumping site, now the learners will be able to use the ground for sport,” said Madonsela.
She added that the involvement of the community in the clean-up campaign shows that the community cares about the school.
