Theft out of motor vehicles spikes in Akasia

An increase in the theft out of motor vehicle and theft of motor vehicle crime categories was previously recorded in the Pretoria North policing precinct until recently.

A notable increase in the number of theft of motor vehicles incidents in the Akasia policing precinct has been recorded, police said.

“There has been a significant increase in the number of such cases,” police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mdluli said.

In a recent incident, Mdluli said a motorist, who was driving a Nissan NP200, reported that he fell victim to an attempt of this crime at a shopping centre in the area.

“He alleged he parked his vehicle in the parking lot at the shopping centre and noticed an unknown man was coming out of his car when he returned to the vehicle,” she said.

The unknown man was then said to be rushed to get into the vehicle parked next to the Nissan and quickly drove off.

Mdluli said the vehicle the assailants used to flee the scene with was a grey Hyundai i10.

“The victim further said he noticed the door lock of his vehicle was tampered with and the ignition wires were cut,” she said.

Mdluli advised motorists to always be vigilant when they parked their vehicles, double-check if all of the car doors were closed before leaving it and always park in a busy area to deter criminals.

At the time, Pretoria North police spokesperson Sergeant Tsakani Miyen said vehicles that criminals targeted to steal included the Nissan NP200 and NP300 bakkies along with the Fiat Uno and Toyota Tazz.

She had also advised drivers of these so-called high-risk vehicles to install gear locks, immobiliser units and steering or pedal locks.

“This will help because it is getting out of hand,” she said.
