Suspect arrested for possession of drugs and unlicenced firearm

The firearm will be sent to ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in the commission of serious and violent crimes.

Mamelodi East police arrested a 30-year-old man at extension 18 for dealing in drugs and possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition following a tip-off.

The police unit was busy with their normal patrols and stop-and-searches when they received information about a man selling drugs, according to police spokesperson, Constable Lethabo Mashiloane.

The description of the suspect was given to the police.

“The police quickly went to the given address,” said Mashiloane.

At about 12:00, police arrived at the suspect’s address where they found the man fitting the description of the alleged drug dealer.

The police searched him after getting his consent.

“While searching his house, police found blue ammunition cases containing 22 live rounds, a black 9mm pistol loaded with 11 live rounds and drugs suspected to be Nyaope with an estimated street value of R2 000,” he said.

The suspect was arrested and detained for dealing in drugs and possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition.

The firearm will be sent to ballistic testing to determine whether it was used in the commission of any crimes.

“The investigation is underway. The suspect will therefore be profiled for possible linkage to previous crimes committed in Mamelodi East or elsewhere,” said Mashiloane.

Police recovered unlicenced firearm, ammunition and a knife.

Acting Mamelodi East station commander Colonel Lindiwe Mnguni congratulated the officers on the arrest.

“I have noted with great concern violent crimes such as hijacking were reported over the weekend. I strongly believe that removing these illegal firearms from our street will help reduce this violent crime,” said Mnguni.

The suspect will appear in the Mamelodi magistrate’s court soon.

Report any criminal activities to Mamelodi East SAPS on 012 818 7079/80 or 0860 10111 or 112.
