Man arrested following shoot-out in the north

Rietgat police arrested a 26-year-old man following a shoot-out between the police and the man in the early hours of Monday morning in Soshanguve, block T.
Captain Stephen Maluleka said a suspicious-looking vehicle sped away when the police approached it during a patrol.
Maluleka said as the police cornered the vehicle, the other passengers ran in different directions.

“The suspect opened fire at the police, but the police returned fire and shot him in the arm and lower body.
“No police officer was injured during the incident. An illegal firearm was found in the suspect’s possession and upon searching the vehicle another unlicenced firearm and ammunition, as well as housebreaking implements, were also found in the vehicle. The serial numbers of the firearms were filed off.”

Maluleka said the man was charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and attempted murder.
“He will appear before the Soshanguve magistrate’s court in due course.”
Rietgat station commander, Brigadier Molatelo Maphoto commended the police for sterling work.
