Cops tackle illicit cigarette trade

In a separate incident, a second stolen vehicle was also recovered.

Akasia police’s crime prevention team tackled the trade of illicit cigarettes when they followed up on a tip-off they received about the transportation thereof on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mdluli said the team followed up on a tip-off about illicit cigarettes being transported in a suspected stolen vehicle in Soshanguve extension 10.

“The value of the cigarettes amounted to R76 000,” she said.

She said a suspected stolen vehicle had also been recovered and would be returned to the rightful owner in time.

“The vehicle was a silver-brown Datsun Go.”

In a separate unrelated incident, Mdluli said a second stolen vehicle was also recovered.

“Police received a complaint of a suspicious vehicle and responded to the delight of the victim whose car was stolen,” she said.

Mdluli said that while the perpetrators were still at large, police were working diligently to arrest them.

“The suspects are still at large, but police are working around the clock to bring them to book,” she said.

Those with information which could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators were urged to contact the Akasia police immediately.

Meanwhile, Akasia police’s head of support Lieutenant Leotlela called on the community to report any suspicious activity instantly to either their Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or the station 012 564 0700.
