Brooklyn police welcome the arrest of would-be car thieves

The trio allegedly fired shots at the security officers in an attempt to get away.

Brooklyn police have welcomed the arrest of the three men who were involved in a shootout with security officers on Thursday in the Menlyn area.

On Thursday, around 11:59, a security guard noticed three unknown men in the parking area at Menlyn Park shopping centre acting suspiciously near a parked Toyota Fortuner, Brooklyn police spokesperson Sergeant Webster Scheepers said.

The security guard requested backup from the control room as the suspects were attempting to break into the vehicle.

“When the three suspects noticed they were being observed by the security guard, they jumped into their motor vehicle and fled from the scene. The reaction motor vehicle of Menlyn security and SCTT pursued the suspects,” he said.

“The Brooklyn police were contacted for assistance and they responded immediately to the incident.”

Scheepers said the suspects caused malicious damage to private property and their vehicle as they tried to flee from the scene.

They then further fled on foot.

“The trio then allegedly fired shots at the security services in an attempt to get away.

“The security officers retaliated and one suspect was shot.”

Scheepers said investigations would continue to link the suspects to other possible related crimes.

The shot suspect is in hospital under police guard.
