Pretoria east athlete looking to add to more gold for SA

Newman competed at the 2021 Troutbeck Africa Triathlon Cup in Zimbabwe where she managed to dominate the elite women’s race, producing a first-place finish.

Local triathlon star Hannah Newman wants to represent the country at top international events after winning gold at this year’s Africa Triathlon Cup.

In September, Newman competed at the 2021 Troutbeck Africa Triathlon Cup in Zimbabwe where she managed to dominate the elite women’s race, producing a first-place finish.

Competing athletes had to endure a tough racecourse, comprising of a fast 750m open water swim and a hilly and technical 20km cycle and 5km run.

Her win moved her up to become the fifth-ranked African athlete on the World Triathlon rankings.

In August this year, Newman represented South Africa at the World Triathlon Championships in Edmonton, Canada, where she placed 31st in the U23 Elite Women category.

She says after experiencing some complications during the race and not performing as well as she had hoped to there in Canada, she was more motivated than ever and wanted to use the experience she gained racing on the international stage, to produce her first elite-level win.

At the moment, the 21-year-old from Pretoria east is juggling a student and athlete life.

She is currently studying for her honours degree in Financial Engineering at the University of Pretoria.

For the rest of the year, Newman said she plans to get her studies ticked off, do some local races, and train in preparation for the South African Triathlon Championships next year in March.

“I love Triathlon because of the diversity of races you can do. You will never get bored training three different sports and also because it’s one of the toughest sports so when you achieve something it is just that must sweeter.”
