Cricketer makes her school proud
“After hard work, sometimes on her own, and dedication, she proved that goals can be achieved."
Uitsig High School was proud to announce that it “produced a provincial cricketer” this year.
“It was announced on Wednesday morning that Courtney Budhoo has been selected to represent North Gauteng Northerns in the u.19 girls cricket team,” said Manda Bester, spokesperson for the school.
She said Courtney decided early this year that her short term goal would be to get selected again this year after she had unfortunately been left out of the team for the past two years.
“After hard work, sometimes on her own, and dedication, she proved that goals can be achieved. Thanks go out to Courtney’s coaches for affording her the opportunity.”
She said the school would like to wish Courtney all the best in reaching her ultimate goal to become a professional woman’s cricketer.
“When I started five years ago, I didn’t even know how to hold a bat or how to throw the ball,” Courtney said.
“It was my twin brother, Curtley, who encouraged me to play cricket.”
Courtney said she decided to give it a shot and that her brother helped her on that journey.
“I started to like the sport, and my brother started coaching me. With his help, along with that of all my other coaches, Werner and Nawn, I was selected in 2018 for the Northerns u.16 team.
“I faced many challenges in life, but I decided to let my dreams be greater than my fears. That has become my motto and I used it to push through and reach my goal.”

Courtney played for her school’s girls first team and said she focused all her energy on reaching her goal. She subsequently started practising with the school’s boys first and second teams and eventually made the team.
“A month ago I achieved my first 50 runs, becoming the first girl ever in the school’s history to achieve that.
“I try to also inspire little kids, as well as my younger sister, Skyla, to play cricket. I would like to make an impact on younger players.”
Courtney said it was hard to make a comeback after all the disruptions caused by the Covid virus.
“I needed to push myself very hard to reach this milestone,” she said, “it required a lot of dedication for me to be successful.
“On that note, I would also like to mention that coach Nawn was like a mother to me who brought me up to be a leader”.
