Another east substation trips, leaving more residents in the dark

This comes amid the reconstruction of the Mooikloof substation that burned down a week ago leaving some residents without electricity.

Another substation in the east of Pretoria has left residents in the dark after it tripped.

The Wapadrand substation tripped on Tuesday evening, affecting areas such as Koedoeberg, Faerie Glen, Lombardi, Olympus, Wapadrand, as well as parts of Equestria.

“The 132KV transformer keeps on tripping when artisans try to supply electricity current to affected consumers,” said the Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

“Sub-transmission team is currently on site investigating.”

Mashigo said the estimated time of return was not yet available and investigations to establish what caused the trip were underway.

This comes amid the reconstruction of the Mooikloof substation that burned down a week ago leaving some residents without electricity.

Areas such as Moreleta Park, Pretorius Park, Mooikloof, Olympus, Woodlands and parts of Garsfontein have been without electricity for more than a week.

The metro said it has so far managed to install 15 switchgear panels, a transformer panel, bus coupler and managed the 11kV cable re-routing.

“All redundant multi-core cables have been removed from the trench,” a statement from the metro read.

More electrical components would be installed and oil of the transformers would be purified.

Power at this substation is expected to be restored on Friday.

Earlier this year, the Wapadrand substation also caught fire for the second time in four years.
