A man from Gerhardsville in Centurion was shot in both his legs during an armed robbery at a farm in Vlakplaas when two farm attacks happened in the early hours of Thursday morning.
According to Jano Terblanche, spokesperson for Plotwatch Gerhardsville, they heard gunshots and responded to a call at around 02:30.
“We found that eight shots were fired at a group of farmworkers in the vicinity of Elephant Rock. We were informed that the attackers tried to steal their motorcycle. We called Erasmia police who responded. “Twenty minutes later and about one kilometre from the farm where the first incident occurred, another incident was reported by an occupant of the farm.”
Terblanche said they found a man, Johan Smit, estimated to be between the age of 55 and 65, was shot in both legs. Six or seven shots were fired with a 9mm pistol. “He heard his dogs barking at around 03:00 and opened the door to check when he was shot by two armed men. “Netcare 911 responded and took the victim to Unitas hospital.” Terblanche said they have been informed that the robbers got away with solar panels and solar equipment and that no suspects have been apprehended yet.
Plotwatch stayed on the scene up until 05:30 to search for the occupant’s dogs that ran away. “When we investigated the area around the residence, we found a ladder. Scorpion and SDS security companies also assisted.” Erasmia police were yet to comment at the time of going to press.
