Update: Wapadrand substation fails to re-energise
Estimated time of repairs is midnight, says the Tshwane metro

Suburbs in the east of Pretoria, which are supplied power to by the Wapadrand substation, were still without power after the substation failed to re-energise on Wednesday, the Tshwane metro said in a statement.
Since Sunday, the Wapadrand substation has been experiencing recurring trips affecting Koedoeberg, Faerie Glen, Lombardi, Olympus, the Wapadrand local area and a part of Equestria.
Tshwane metro spokesperson Hilgard Matthews said earlier findings revealed a fault on the mono-block of transformer B, which was then repaired.
Some parts of the suburbs were switched on, but later the metro discovered that one of the components on the transformer was unstable and had to be reset. Upon energising the substation, the transformer tripped again, which then indicated another possible fault.
“The City then resorted to sourcing the services of a dry-ice blasting company to remove carbon on the affected components (busbars) as it is more effective than cleaning it with bare hands,” Matthews said.
On Thursday morning, he said that the busbars were cleaned on Wednesday night.
“Thereafter, it was subjected to tests to determine their suitability to be re-energised. Unfortunately, it failed the pressure tests and therefore could not be re-energised. The team is dismantling the busbar components from the affected zone to visually inspect, clean, and test them individually to determine their condition,” Tshwane metro added.
Matthews said the damaged compromised components would be replaced.
The estimated time of repairs was at midnight tonight.
The metro also gave an update on the Mooikloof substation, which burst into flames last week Wednesday leaving one worker injured.
Matthews said progress at the substation remained steady over the past 24 hours.
He said targets were met on Wednesday and the team would install the multicores to the protection panels, demolish the gables and finish the roofing of Room C which was 80% completed.
More updates were expected to be given during Thursday.
