UPDATE: Metro making progress rebuilding substation

According to the metro, it could begin restoring power to some of the affected areas by Saturday evening.

The Tshwane metro’s teams were making “good progress” in rebuilding the Mooikloof substation by Saturday afternoon.

“The most recent update at the Mooikloof substation is positive as teams are making good progress in rebuilding the substation,” metro spokesperson Hilgard Matthews said.

This after the substation caught fire last week Wednesday, December 1.

Initially, the Tshwane metro estimated it would take nine days to restore electricity to the affected areas.

“Teams are currently occupied with finalising the connection of cables to the panels in section A. This will be completed during the day and allow gradual restoration of affected suburbs into the evening,” Matthews said.

He added that the commissioning of section A of the substation would result in the restoration of power to 60% of the affected areas.

“The City will adopt a phased approach to the restoration to manage the load on the substation,” Matthews said.

While this was being done, he said their teams would also be finalising the installation of the busbars into the panels in section C.

“The teams will be working throughout the night to complete the testing and commissioning of this section,” he said.

Matthews also noted that criminals, however, tried to use the outage to their advantage by attempting to commit theft in the area on Friday.

“Unfortunately, criminals used the outage as an opportunity to commit theft in the area yesterday. However, the City responded and ensured that the cables have been replaced,” he said.

Residents would be kept updated on the areas where power will be restored during the day.
