Rietgat police ends 16 Days of Activism campaign door-to-door

"The police further encouraged people to open cases for prosecution not for making money through perpetrators of this crime."

Rietgat police and the CPF went on a door-to-door campaign in their policing area, visiting clinics as well as a shopping complex to talk to the inhabitants about gender-based violence (GBV) on Thursday.

This was to mark the end of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and children on Friday.

Rietgat police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka said the station with the aid of community health workers also educated patients about the harsh realities of crimes perpetrated against women and children.

“The police further encouraged people to open cases for prosecution and not for making money through perpetrators of this crime. The Rietgat police echoed the same sentiments with the CPF about the campaign that it is time for accountability and taking action.”

Maluleka said among other hints and tips the police shared, they also implored the community to stand up against GBV and emphatically told them to report such cases.

He said they also advised the community to protect the identity of victims, especially children on social media.

“About 1300 pamphlets were distributed during the campaign in households, clinics and a shopping complex.

A community member who identified herself as Nxumalo from Block JJ applauded the police for the eye-opening session.

“We were really in the dark about some of the things we go through in our houses, we never knew that one must give consent to sleep with the man at home.”

Maluleka said other community members urged the police to come more often to their houses to allow them a chance to strike at some of the domestic crimes “while the iron is still hot”.

“The police and the CPF vowed and pledged for 365 of Activism against GBV and femicide. At clinic 3, Block X and Block JJ clinics over 250 patients appreciated the visit and some of them raised their concerns on the sidelines about their experiences with the men and women in blue.

“All the negative concerns were registered and escalated to the leadership of the station for further handling.”
