Centurion Hotel retrenches 86 staff members

No less than 86 Centurion Hotel staff members are being retrenched after the hotel’s temporary closure in August last year. The process started two weeks ago and Tuesday next week another meeting with the unions is due. According to a director of the Legacy Hotels group, Gert Brumme, the group was simply not willing to risk the safety of guests staying at the hotel any longer.

Hennops Revival reaps fruits of hard work

Activists who are working on cleaning the Hennops River believe their hard work is paying off. This as a litter catchment system installed by Hennops Revival in the Hennops River at Irene Club, Centurion, was doing “a great job”, according to the organisation. “The litter trap is very effective; we keep it clean. We spend approximately three days a week cleaning the trap to make sure it remains functioning.”

Eldo parents and learners unhappy with dept’s decision

Parents and learners of Hoërskool Eldoraigne gathered on Tuesday morning, to hand over a petition to the South African Teacher’s Union (SAOU) to express their dissatisfaction over the return of the school’s principal. The principal, Dr Anton Prinsloo, resumed his position after an absence of three months while being investigated by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) for the alleged bullying of children and female teachers. Various parents said their children reported to them daily that female teachers leave Prinsloo’s office in tears and found it very upsetting. Children love their teachers.

Opening of Centurion taxi rank on the cards

Although not formally opened yet, all parties involved with the newly-built state-of-the-art taxi rank Centurion have committed to relocating to the premises. Roads and transport MMC Dikeledi Selowa said that engagements between her office and the Centurion taxi rank role-players were progressing positively.

Maintenance to be addressed at Zwartkop school crossing

Residents of Eldoraigne are making progress in safeguarding the notoriously “dangerous crossing” in front of Hoërskool Zwartkop as well as the alley connecting the suburb with the crossing. The alley connects Frederik Avenue and the crossing of Mopani and the R101 Old Johannesburg Road. According to local ward councillor Cindy Bilson, the provincial roads and transport department agreed to a gate being installed in the alley to curb crime in the area. Access to and from the neighbourhood will be regulated by opening and closing the gate at certain times.

Centurion’s April hero is a kind-hearted firefighter

Centurion’s hero in Rekord and Westpack’s competition for April is Mohamed Docrat (20). “I appreciate having been nominated as a hero and thank everyone who thought of me,” Docrat said. The youngster is a volunteer firefighter and assists Laudium disaster management as a first responder whenever he can. Laudium disaster management is a “non-profit volunteer unit that assists the community with anything from emergencies to humanitarian aid, wherever it is needed. This includes accidents, house or bush fires, and medical emergencies”.

From cookies to services, residents’ hearts and hands are open

Both residents and organisations in Centurion and Pretoria have opened both their hearts and wallets in helping the vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic. A local old age home in Gerhardsville in Centurion, Huis Oase, pleaded for an oxygenator for its residents of their Laudium Covid Care group. A local sports club, Jacaranda Athletic Club “immediately got involved and pledged to donate the needed equipment,” said spokesperson, Fanie Vosloo.

Solidarity honours ‘medical heroes’ at Centurion hospital

Solidarity Helping Hand (Solidariteit Helpende Hand) showed their appreciation for Pretoria’s healthcare and front line workers at Netcare Unitas hospital in Centurion by tying a huge white ribbon around the hospital building. “Words can’t describe the appreciation and admiration we have for our frontline workers,” said Dirk Hermann, head of operations at Solidarity.
