Public urged to remain vigilant at all times
Motorists and community members urged to remain vigilant at all times.
Mamelodi police have noted with great concern the increasing number of car hijackings and robberies reported in the area.
Police spokesperson, Constable Lethabo Mashiloane said the police had plans to curb both offences.
“The deployed men and women in blue in Mamelodi East are working tirelessly to ensure that these violent crimes come to an end,” said Mashiloane.
On Monday around 08:50, a 33-year-old male suspect was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and 16 rounds of live ammunition in Nellmapius extension 24.
Mashiloane said the arrested suspect had been on the run as he was wanted for other violent crimes, such as attempted murder and armed robbery.
Later on, around 15:30, another 38-year-old man who was also on the run was arrested for armed robbery.
“The station will continue with its efforts to bring these perpetrators who commit these violent crimes to book, ” Mashiloane said.
Community members were urged to keep the following safety tips:
Hijackings
– Avoid being alone in a vehicle when travelling at night.
– Do not stop in a secluded area.
– Do not pick up hitchhikers, particularly when you are driving alone.
– Always be alert when driving. If you suspect that you are being followed by a suspicious vehicle, drive to nearest police station or call 10111.
– Increase caution at intersections: always keep a look out for people loitering around your car.
Robberies
– Do not keep too much money in the business premises.
– Do not display money in public.
– Do not ask help from strangers at ATMs.
– Do not keep your shop open until late.
– Request neighbours to keep an eye when you go away.
– Beware of criminals who disguise themselves as prophets on the streets with an intention to prey on victims.
– Mashiloane encouraged the public to report any illegal activities or any suspicious looking persons to Mamelodi East SAPS on 012 815 7000 or call 08600-10111.
