Three learners from one family start grade 1 with same teacher
“I can now look forward to the awaiting school year. I am at peace and know my son is in good hands,” says the mother.
Parents of Laerskool Hennopspark were overwhelmed with joy when they were informed that their youngest of three, would be in a specific teacher’s grade 1 class this year.
Lindie and Louis Wolhuter, residents of Clubview, Centurion, have three children; Carla (21), Lisa (13) and Daniël (6).
“Both Carla and Lisa were in Jacolene Smit’s class in grade 1 and we just thought it seemed fitting that Daniël followed suit,” said Lindie, who has also been a former teacher.

Smit, who has been teaching at the school for the past 33 years, was herself thrilled at the idea of having Daniël in her class.
“The Wolhuters is a lovely family, and Lindie and Louis are wonderful parents,” Smit said, adding: “A teacher always appreciates it when parents are involved and contributes to our calling and causes.”
Carla studies information design at the University of Pretoria now and recalled her first day in grade 1, 15 years ago.

“I remember I was scared because I didn’t know anyone and didn’t have a friend during break when Miss Smit went and called a girl to play with me.”
Lisa, now grade 8 in Hoërskool Zwartkop, remembered Miss Smit especially for “never ever getting cross”.
“All I remember about Miss Smit’s class is that I wrote my first spelling test ever in her class, and that I panicked because I couldn’t remember how to spell ‘kat’. And that Miss Smit was a very sweet teacher.”

Smit remembered them as “pleasant, well-mannered learners. Carla was very quiet, but Lisa was quite outspoken”.
“Lisa was in grade 4 when one day she spotted me and walked straight up to me to enquire why I coloured my hair. I said my hairdresser suggested darker roots since it was winter, however, I think I should change it back to its original colour.
“Lisa then replied that she agreed I better do that.”

Daniël said he was ready for school, however, did not feel like dressing up in his school uniform for a photo.
Lindie said she actually prayed that Daniël would be in Jacolene’s class because they believe she would be the right teacher for him.
“I can now look forward to the awaiting school year. I am at peace and know my son is in good hands.
“Jacolene actually ‘ordered’ him, because when Lisa was in her class, she said the first little Wolhuter has red hair, the second, is a brunette, and now all we need is a blonde.
“We had quite a laugh about that when Danël was indeed blonde.”
