Annual book covering campaign underway

The campaign is growing fast and hopefully they will meet their target of making sure that all learners in Mamelodi have beautiful covered books.

This year the back-to-school campaign target was to cover more than 700 books for Mamelodi and Nellmapius children for free.

Organiser of the campaign Tlago Tisa Selepe said the books will be covered by volunteers for free as part of the campaign.

“The need within the society itself has grown, especially with people recovering from the impact of Covid-19 which left a lot of families in poverty, unemployment and retrenched, leading to a lot of children forming part of the stats which now needs to be assisted.”

Selepe said this was an annual event and that was growing fast.

“Our target is to make sure that all learners in Mamelodi have their books covered so they look neat and last longer.

“For this campaign to be successful we desperately need book covers, tape, scissors and other additional stationery including donation of school uniforms.

“The aim of the campaign is to motivate learners to look forward to go to school every day,” she said, adding that volunteers were needed to assist.”

Even parents who bring books for the children to be covered are welcome to come on board and help with covering other children’s books.

Last year they had about 30 volunteers who helped out with covering books.

“The campaign is growing fast and hopefully we will meet our target of making sure that all learners in Mamelodi have covered books.

“The initiative started after they realised that there were children who did not have the means to cover their books.”

Selepe said they approached several schools in Mamelodi and asked that the children who wanted their books covered should bring their books to cover them.

“We are happy with the response from both parents and learners.

“The children were accompanied by their parents and we even organised lunch for the children.”

Selepe said the theme for the event was “Help keep a child in school without the fear of discrimination”.

She said members of the public should come on board with any form of donations to make the back-to-school campaign a success and ensure all children in Mamelodi and surrounding areas had beautiful books.

Stakeholders who made last year’s campaign possible were Family House Ministries and Kingdom, Voice Radio Station and the Rock Stars bikers.

The campaign will start on January 15 and will end on February 5.
