Police launch Adopt-a-Cop programme in Moot
Adopt-a-Cop programme to help police to effectively fight against crime at schools.
The Wonderboompoort police launched the Adopt-a-Cop programme at several schools in their policing precinct on the first school day for 2022 academic year on Wednesday.
“The purpose of the Adopt-a-Cop programme is to ensure that our organisational corporate image remains friendly and is entrenched in the young minds, thus making the South African Police Service an employer of note in the future,” Wonderboompoort police spokesperson Constable Mandlakayise Zwane told Rekord.
Zwane said the purpose of the programme was also to encourage the learners to reach out to the police about any forms of criminality that may be taking place in their midst.
He said this was important in order for the police to effectively fight crime in the area.
Police visited Iona Convent Girls Primary School, Iona Convent Girls High School, General Jacques Piernaar Primary School, Mayville Primary School, Hillview Secondary School, Capital Park Primary School, Boerefort Primary School, Alma special school and Prospectus special school.
The programme was not the only focus for the day, as the police also embarked on a school safety programme.
The programme, led by the social crime prevention, community safety and Kopano Manyano NPO, saw the police address learners on issues of bullying, criminality in schools, use of drugs and their disadvantages to learners.
“Flyers containing various information including crime safety tips were handed out to the learners and teachers at the schools.”
Zwane said school visits would continue until Friday, since the education department had opted to continue with rotation of grades in observation of Covid-19 regulations.
Wonderboompoort station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Dinah Tabane commended the police and the external stakeholders who selflessly took their time to ensure that children were safe on their first day of school in 2022.
“Leaners were empowered with a lifelong knowledge pertaining to criminality and how to be law-abiding citizens,” she said.
She encouraged learners to report crime to the police or call the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111.
