Pretoria CBD raids lead to 43 arrests

Police targeted the selling, distribution and use of drugs at parks, schools and abandoned buildings.

A total of 43 people were arrested following a five-day police operation in the Pretoria CBD to clamp down on drugs.

Their crime prevention unit, along with sector policing, held the operation from Wednesday, according to Pretoria Central police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise.

They targeted the selling, distribution and use of drugs at parks, schools and abandoned buildings.

Drugs such as heroin, nyaope, dagga and other substances were confiscated and booked in at the exhibit office for weighing. Later, it would be taken to forensics for analysis.

“Two people were arrested for malicious damage to property, common robbery, theft and driving under the influence of alcohol. Most of the suspects were found to be illegal immigrants as they had no valid documentation,” he said.

“Drug use and abuse remain a major concern in the city and the station is urging the community to assist in reporting drugs.”
