Boy (6) murder accused to remain in police custody

Community members with placards chanting outside the court vowed to “deal” with the accused should the court grant him bail.

The accused in the murder case of a six-year-old boy will remain in police custody until his bail hearing set for January 27.

A group protesting outside the Mamelodi magistrate’s court welcomed the decision to postpone the case of murder accused Tinyiko Shaun Sekwane (27) on Monday.

Community members with placards chanting outside the court vowed to “deal” with the accused should the court grant him bail.

Sekwane was arrested after Olwethu Austin Zwane from Mamelodi East, section 17, was found in a backyard room in a pool of blood along with a knife under the suspect’s bed at his grandmother’s house on October 22, 2021.

Virginia Tleane, a spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, said they opposed Sekwane’s bail hearing.

“We condemn violence on women and children. We want a safe South Africa for everybody who lives in it,” said Tleane.

Zwane’s family was supported by community members, Department of Community Safety and the Mamelodi Women’s Brigade.

“We are going to support the Zwane family until justice prevails,” said Tleane.

“We want to make sure that criminals like Sekwane are permanently removed from peaceful society.

“The court should set an example to other criminals who are thinking of committing similar crimes.”

Sekwane was arrested after his uncle called the police who made the gruesome discovery, according to police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane.

“His family started looking for the boy after they realised he went missing while playing with friends not far from home.”

The family said they last saw him in the afternoon when he went to buy snacks, accompanied by the friends he had been playing with.
