Art lovers reflect over striking exhibition

Bont Huijs, an exclusive gallery space tucked away in Pretoria East, opened its doors on October 15 to unveil Manners Not Included, a striking new exhibition by acclaimed artist Philippe Bousquet.

Refusing to exist as simple decoration, the collection purposefully creates an atmosphere of productive discomfort. Bousquet’s pieces confront viewers with raw truths, addressing body politics, religious motifs, and social commentary through an extraordinary mix of mediums. Visitors encountered everything from delicate silverwork and fine sculpting to classic surrealist painting interwoven with spray paint and street art typography.

Bousquet, a former architect and self-taught silversmith who has worked full-time as a fine artist in South Africa since 2004, brings a distinct structural elegance to his rebellious aesthetic. Whether working in bronze, steel, or ceramics, his art makes you stop, reflect, and engage deeply with the space around you.

Beyond the artwork itself, the opening night celebrated local creative culture. Fellow artists turned out in strong support, exchanging ideas and demonstrating the vitality of Pretoria’s fine art ecosystem. The gathering served as a reminder that premium, world-calibre art – whether created by international talent or local visionaries – continues to thrive on South African soil.
