Online eye tests to renew driver’s licences
“Motorists would be able to access these services in the comfort of their homes.”

Online eye-testing was just one of several new planned services that would reduce the number of times applicants will need to go to centres to renew their driving licences.
These new online services will be launched by the transport department next month. They are expected to reduce the pressure on driving licence testing centres.
“Motorists would be able to access these services in the comfort of their homes,” transport minister Fikile Mbalula said earlier this week.
The services will be launched through the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
“Through them, we are augmenting testing centres’ capacity,” he said.
Mbalula made the announcement while addressing the media at the Grasmere toll plaza on the festive season fatalities.
“Processes to digitise driving licence renewal procedures are in the pipeline and will result in a paperless process,” he said.
These digitised procedures would include online eye-testing.
The results of the eye test would then be automatically uploaded and linked to the user’s application.
“Long-term interventions include integration of driving licence simulators into the testing procedures,” Mbalula added.
This, he said, would entail testing the driver’s level of knowledge of the motor vehicle and rules of the road before they actually got into the vehicle.
“The recording of the driving licence testing and digitising test results will also be part of this innovation,” Mbalula said.
Additional functionality would be completing driving licence renewals online.
Mbalula further said that their publication of the 2022 RTMC regulations publication this month, taken the first step to implement measures to curb lawlessness on the roads.
These regulations included the introduction of online services to the public; booking for learner’s licence tests; renewing drivers’ licences, motor vehicle registration; and licencing along with online vehicle licence renewals.
“This will aid in addressing the corruption associated with issuing of these licences and or rendering of the services,” Mbalula said.
