16-year-old at Soshanguve high bags 6 distinctions
"I did not expect these results because it was a difficult year."

Excitement ruled when the class of 2021 collected their results on Friday in Soshanguve.

Kamogelo Masilela (16) was the stand-out student in Soshanguve secondary school.
Masilela bagged six distinctions.
She said the reason she matriculated at 16 was because she was promoted from grade 7 to grade 9.
Masilela said her achievements exceeded her expectations and she was overwhelmed with joy.
“I’m beyond happy and proud of myself.”
She said this year she will be pursuing her dream of becoming a chartered accountant at the University of Pretoria.
“I love accounting, I enjoy it and I am very passionate about it.”
She said the difficult challenge this year was time management.
“When you study, you should be able to manage your time very well and be disciplined. It was very difficult but I had to work on it.”

An emotional Lunyana Zungu from Soshanguve secondary school said she was very excited and did not expect her results.
With tears running down her face, Zungu said she will be studying to become a social worker at the University of Johannesburg.
“I realised that a lot of people in South Africa are living in poverty, other people can help but they just need the extra push to help others. I want to be that extra push to help other people.
“I did not expect these results because it was a difficult year. Late last year, I lost my aunt, I kept having dreams about her and it was disturbing me. I know she is proud of me because she was my number one fan.”

The top achiever in Elizabeth Matsemela secondary school, Nkosinathi Gcingca (18) said she had been through a lot last year.
“These results are not just for me, they are for my mother too because she was really sick and I had to work my hardest. So seeing these results makes me so happy.
“Some of the challenges I faced were loadshedding, the pandemic and the rotation [system] also did not make things easy. I tried to do the most every day when I didn’t come to school.”
Gcingca said she wants to study economics but she has not decided where she wants to study.
“I’m keeping my options open but I have applied at a lot of places.”

Principal of Soshanguve secondary school, Sydney Sibiya said he was overwhelmed by the matric performances amid Covid-19 and the rotation system.
“We have an improvement of 0,1% and this is very important to me.”
Sibiya said he would like to encourage the learners who did not make it to keep on coming to them as the teachers will assist them.
“They must not sit at home, crying there with nobody to help, we are open to every learner that needs grade 12 and will definitely assist them.
There is room of improvement, they must come and register so that when they write their exams at the end of the year so that they can pass.”
