Garsfontein top performing school in Gauteng

The matric class of 2021 kept their school's name high as Garsfontein also received an award for the school with the most learners who received university admission.

Hoërskool Garsfontein was named top performing school during a function by the Gauteng education department in the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg on Friday morning.

The matric class of 2021 kept their school’s name high as Garsfontein also received an award for the school with the most learners who received university admission.

In 2019, they were also nominated for this achievement and were also crowned as the national number one school that year.

Principal of Garsfontein, Leon Bantjies said that they compete against top schools in the east of Pretoria.

Garsfontein achieved a 100% pass rate with 345 candidates getting university admission.

Out of the 368 matrics, 809 distinctions were obtained (2.2 distinctions per candidate).

“One of our greatest characteristics is that we are a balanced, caring and community school.

“We have excellent teachers who have made a lot of sacrifices. The learners must also receive recognition for their dedication.

“Thank you also to every parent who supported their child,” he said.

Garsfontein has been among the top two schools in Gauteng every year since 2014, except for the 2020 matric results.

Lucha Huyser is Garsfontein’s top learner with an average of 93%.

For the 32nd consecutive year, Hoërskool Waterkloof achieved a 100% pass rate.

Waterkloof is the second top performing school in Gauteng with a number of learners who can go study for a Bachelor’s degree. The school also received an award for being the third top academic school.

Since 2008, they have won the award for the top academic school in Gauteng 10 times.

Die Hoërskool Menlopark was named the second top academic school in Gauteng.

Menlopark also achieved a 100% pass rate with an average of 73.8% from the 294 matric group of 2021.

A total of 857 distinctions (2.9 per matriculant), were achieved.

Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool also boasts with a 100% pass rate for the 36th consecutive year.

A total of 249 learners passed the national senior certificate examination with a group average of 77.03%.

They achieved 850 A-symbols (3.41 per learner); 15 for Alpha Mathematics and one for Additional Mathematics.

Thus, the matric class of 2021 achieved a total of 803 distinctions (2.2 distinctions per candidate) behind their names.

Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool’s top candidates are Junika Peasley with an average of 95.43%, Emilia Janse van Rensburg in second place with 95.14% and Nicole Sutton with 95.14%.

Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool’s Jan Gertenbach Wiese was crowned as Gauteng’s top learner for English first additional language.

The 269 candidates performed exceptionally well and achieved a pass rate of 100%.

As many as 91% of the matric group passed with university admission. The group together achieved 563 A-symbols, of which 99 are A+.

Wiese, Jonty Bleeker, Paul Sweers, Leander Visser and Aaron Tollig each achieved eight distinctions.

According to the department, various factors are taken into account, including the number of distinctions, subject choices and learners with university admission to establish the top schools.
