"We were pleased that we have at least removed 596 bags of waste from the Hennops River on the first day, 1 068 bags on the second day and 336 bags on the third day."

An entire bag of unused condoms was among the rubbish recently dredged from the Hennops River by volunteer workers.

“We also found nappies, a bag of aerosol cans and more than one bag of lost soles or shoes,” said Hennops Revival founder, Tarryn Johnston.

According to her, 9kg of bottle caps, 36kg Pet G, 73kg of Pet C, 15kg of Pp, 15kg of LDPE C, 13kg of HDPE C and HDPE W respectively, 7kg Pp woven, 18kg of LDPE C, 31kg of Pet J and 14kg steel cans were also removed.

In celebration of Wetlands Month in February, they recently cleaned up over three days in Clubview.

“We were pleased that we have at least removed 596 bags of waste from the Hennops River on the first day, 1 068 bags on the second day and 336 bags on the third day, before a lot of waste was washed once again downstream due to flooding of the area.

“That is 2 000 bags of waste removed in three days. We had BluSwirl Recycling, who volunteered over the three days, sending us the recycling tallies that have been taken out of the river.

“We had an amazing group of volunteers from Hoërskool Zwartkops, Midstream College, Sutherland high school and Scouts join us today for community service hours. And numerous volunteers from the community.”

Johnston thanked all the sponsors who were involved on the day.

“Our MMC for Environment councillors Katlego Mathebe and Ina Strijdom also joined us and we thank them for their special interest in this project.

“Thanks to Thabo Tshukudu, Buurman Magaela from the mayor’s office and to Edwin Khotsia from the waste department, and Elijah Ngwetsana from the water and sanitation department for assisting us with transport for the three days.”

Also, she said, a big shout out to the Hennops Revival crew for their continued hard work, and much gratitude for the donations from the community members.

She said the ground is still saturated from the recent rains and flooding so water can’t be absorbed and rivers will automatically be more susceptible to flooding.

Johnston was also proud to announce that a photo of her has been selected by the French NPO, Champ d’actions, for a photo competition.

“The theme was: pollution of our rivers.”

The president of the competition and the jury is Laurent Baheux, one of the greatest wildlife photographers in the world, she said.

“It is one out ten chosen photos, selected from more than 600 entries worldwide. We are in the last phase of the competition, namely the public voting phase.”

Hennops Revival announced they have an official working relationship with the Tshwane metro.

“Although we have always had a fantastic and functional working relationship with the municipality, we now have an official memorandum of understanding between us,” said Johnston.

“We will continue to help the municipality and are proud to be of service to the community,” she said.

Johnston said this Friday Hennops Revival will have the assistance of about 100 children to assist them in cleaning up the river in the Cornwall area.
