Rietgat police arrest two Facebook Marketplace scam suspects in taxi intercept

A buyer lured by a mobile toilet advertisement turned the tables on alleged robbers by tracking them down with the help of law enforcement.

Two suspects have been arrested in Rietgat after police intercepted a white Toyota Venture taxi travelling from Mabopane Station towards Winterveldt following an alleged armed robbery and kidnapping.

Members of the Tshwane District Online Task Team were patrolling the area on Monday, October 13, at 14:00 when an informer reported that two suspects linked to the robbery were travelling in the vehicle.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said officers intercepted the taxi, finding the driver and two suspects inside.

The victim arrived at the scene and identified the suspects.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had allegedly been lured through an advertisement on Facebook Marketplace offering mobile toilets for sale,” said Van Dyk. “After responding to the advertisement, the victim was allegedly robbed of personal belongings.”
