Load shedding extended to Saturday

Due to the unreliability and unpredictability of the generators, Oberholzer said the power utility had no choice but to extend to load shedding to Saturday.

Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented continuously from Tuesday afternoon to Saturday, Eskom announced.

In a statement, the power utility said many of the power plant units broke down across the country over the weekend.

Eskom’s group chief operating officer Jan Oberholzer said the unit failures were coupled by Medupi trip on Monday.

“Just before 16:00 yesterday, Medupi 3 tripped. The load loss increased further by 500MW resulting in the complete insufficient capacity to meet the evening peak. The total loss at that stage was 4500MW.

“We had to implement stage 2 load shedding at a very short period yesterday afternoon,” he said.

By Tuesday morning, the total breakdowns amount to 16 505MW while planned maintenance is 5 505MW of capacity.

Due to the unreliability and unpredictability of the generators, Oberholzer said the power utility had no choice but to extend to load shedding to Saturday.
