Search leads to finding drugs and dangerous weapons on Mams learners
"There will be more similar surprise school safety programmes at Mamelodi schools."
Learners of Lehlabile secondary school in Mamelodi East were found in possession of drugs and alcohol at the school premises.
This came after the Mamelodi community patrolling forum (CPF) together with police and the 4+1 taxi association held a surprise school safety programme on March 4.
CPF chairperson Eddie Mnguni said they responded after manpower was needed at the school since there was an event held at the school premises.
The school was hosting the grade 8 learners freshers’ ball.
“Patrollers at the school asked for manpower to help with searching people at the school gate on the day of the event,” said Mnguni.
The CPF responded to the call as there is gangsterism at local schools in Mamelodi and they wanted to prevent fights among the learners.
The surprise school search operation was conducted in the morning at the school’s main gate.
“Learners were found in possession of dagga, cigarettes, cough syrup and 10 scissors.”

Mnguni added that the aim of the surprise search was to educate learners about the dangers of taking drugs.
“The learners found in possession of drugs will be working with parents and teachers to make sure they don’t go back to drugs.”

Mnguni added that the safety school programme was also started after numerous complaints from school teachers and parents of substance abuse and dangerous weapons at Mamelodi schools.
“There will be more similar surprise school safety programmes held at Mamelodi schools,” he said.
Mnguni added that the community needs to take charge of their local schools and start reporting any wrongdoing at the schools to the police.
