Exercise caution in rainy weather conditions, road users told

“The Gauteng Traffic Police would like to appeal to road users to adhere to the rules and regulations of the road at all times to avoid unnecessary crashes on our roads."

Road users were urged to exercise caution when driving along roads in the Gauteng province due to the rainy weather.

Gauteng traffic police (GTP) spokesperson, Sello Maremane said a number of road accidents and floods were recorded since the early hours of Wednesday.

“The GTP would like to appeal to road users to adhere to the rules and regulations of the road at all times to avoid unnecessary crashes on our roads,” he said.

Notable accidents, Maremane said, were recorded long the R21 south on the link to the R24 west, N1 north, N12/R24 west before Gillooly’s, and the N3 north before London Road exit.

He said that flooding was also experienced in some parts of the province.

“Motorists are reminded, once again, to adhere to a safe following distance, slow down during wet conditions, switch on headlamps while driving, and to always buckle up,” Maremane said.

He added that it was important for motorists and other road users to exercise caution as it was still the rainy season.

“We also call upon road users to avoid low-lying bridges and areas prone to flash floods, wherever possible,” Maremane said.

One such area, prone to flash floods in Tshwane, was Centurion.

Last month, during flash floods, the bodies of two men were recovered in the area after they were swept away.

One of the bodies was recovered from a bakkie which was washed away in the Centurion area while the other was recovered near the Centurion Lake hotel, three days later.

Other flooding incidents were also recorded in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria, and in the Roodeplaat area, north of Pretoria.

“We also discourage motorists from driving through fast-flowing water since it is difficult to measure its depth. This is an important step towards saving the lives of road users, especially during rainy conditions,” he said.

Law-enforcement authorities would be on high alert to ensure the safety of road users, Maremane said.
