Only selected residents to be moved in metro’s planned relocations

“The duration of the relocation will be determined once all of the dwellers who are going to be relocated are registered and the City knows of their numbers."

Only selected informal settlement dwellers from Gomora Malusi extension 1 and 2 and the new Booysens extension 4 informal settlement would be relocated to Orchards extension 110, the Tshwane metro told Rekord on Tuesday.

“In a meeting with the affected residents, it was resolved that all the dwellers that are in the recently flooded wetlands, Sasol servitude, and Rand Water servitude will be relocated to proposed Orchards extension 110,” Tshwane human settlements divisional head Sello Chippu said.

The metro announced last month, three weeks after the widespread flash floods, that it would be ready to commence with the relocations in two to three weeks.

Chippu further said they were on track with the relocation process.

“The metro is in the process of shack marking and registering all the dwellers who need to be relocated. As soon as that is complete, the relocation will commence,” he said.

However, it was unclear how long the relocation process would take.

“The duration of the relocation will be determined once all of the dwellers who are going to be relocated are registered and the City knows of their numbers,” Chippu said.

He further said the daily lives of the dwellers who would be relocated would not be affected as they would be relocated within 20km, which was acceptable in line with the metro.

“The actual distance is 10km and it falls within the 20km radius which is acceptable for relocation for families within the City of Tshwane. Proposed Orchards extension 110 is accessible through three key strategic roads – N4, Brits Road, and R80 which link the CBD directly to Ga-Rankuwa,” Chippu said.

The Orchards extension 110 was the same portion of land that other informal settlement dwellers from the Heatherdale informal settlement were relocated to.

These informal dwellers were relocated between the end of last year and the beginning of this year.

At the time of announcing the relocation, human settlements MMC Abel Tau said he would also engage with the community of Andeon about the development of Andeon extension 37.

“The human settlements department is fully committed to bringing dignity to our people and to ensure that all affected residents are relocated once more land has been acquired and properly prepared for allocation,” he said.
