United defender returns after a lengthy injury

The 21-year-old played a crucial role when his team beat AmaZulu FC 2-0.

SuperSport United centre-back Kegan Johannes returned this past weekend after recovering from an injury he picked up last year.

The 21-year-old played a crucial role when his team beat AmaZulu FC 2-0 in the DStv Premiership second leg encounter on the weekend.

He said he was happy to be back and to have contributed to the team.

“The team performed very well, and a win is always a good feeling. This was a hard-fought battle and I think we really deserved the three points.”

The young defender emphasised that he returned at the right time but needs to work on his fitness level going forward.

“My recovery process went well. I’m happy it wasn’t rushed, and we took all necessary measures to make sure that I return a better and stronger player. The players and technical team were also supportive during the process because it is very frustrating being on the sideline not being able to do much.

“I think upon my return the technical staff didn’t rush things and just throw me in from the start, they gradually got me back into action,” said Johannes.

The Cape Town-born defender felt the team stuck to the game plan in all the matches he did not participate in besides dropping points.

“It is not easy coming back after missing a few matches. One must work seriously on their fitness but like I said, the support I got from the team was amazing.

“In the previous matches I think the team did what was asked of them, it was just that we were unfortunate and couldn’t find the back of the net,” he said.

Johannes is hopeful that the players such as Thami Gabuza and Guily Manziba, who picked up injuries a few weeks ago, return to the squad.

“A few players re-joined the team after recovering from injuries. The team is getting much stronger and there is more depth in the team as well. It is a good thing and we know that our striker Gabuza plays an integral part in the team,” he concluded.

Meanwhile Matsatsantsa are currently preparing for their next cup match against Platinum City Rovers FC on the road this coming weekend.

The match is scheduled for Saturday night at the Olen Park Stadium on Saturday night. Kick-off is at 18:00.
