National petrol station shutdown is a hoax
A sound clip, which went viral on WhatsApp on Thursday morning, claimed there would be a “major shutdown” of all petrol stations on Friday.
Reports of a national shutdown of petrol stations on Friday were denounced by the petroleum industry authority on Thursday afternoon.
“We’re not aware [of it]. It’s fake news to our knowledge,” SA Petroleum Industry Association spokesperson Cindy-Lee Maneveld said.
This was after a sound clip, which went viral on WhatsApp on Thursday morning, claimed there would be a “major shutdown” of all petrol stations on Friday.

A woman, who spoke on the sound clip, claimed the shutdown could extend to Saturday and Sunday.
She concluded the sound clip by saying that people should fill up their tanks on Thursday as it was unclear when petrol would be available again.
Meanwhile, Automobile Association spokesperson Layton Beard said they did not know about such a planned shutdown.
“We know nothing about it,” he said.
Several petrol stations, located in parts of Pretoria, said they would be continuing business as usual on Friday.
