Cellphone snatchers arrested in Centurion

The Lyttelton police station crime prevention unit was patrolling hotspot areas known for street robberies when they heard a gunshot.

Two men were caught trying to escape after robbing a person of his cell phone in Centurion on Tuesday.

The incident took place at around 11:30 when members of the Lyttelton police station crime prevention unit were patrolling hotspot areas known for street robberies, said police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.

It was during this time that the team of police officers heard a gun being fired.

“Upon further investigation, they spotted a white Hyundai sedan vehicle driving at high speed down towards the CBD area. They came across a member of the public who told them that the suspects had just robbed him of his cell phone,” Miller said.

“The officers immediately called for backup and chased the suspect’s vehicle. The vehicle was eventually stopped on Heuwel Avenue close to South Street.

The pair were arrested and the victim’s cell phone was recovered.

“The suspects will be charged with possession of suspected stolen property and common robbery,” Miller said.

“We would also like to thank all the security companies that also responded to give the police officers back up.”
