Local primary schools welcome generous uniform, school bag donations
"Community members use our public transport every day and these donations are a way of giving back to our loyal customers."
Ninety lucky learners from Sediba Sa Thuto and Moretele primary schools in Mamelodi received a donation of full school uniforms and school bags.
The generous donation was made by various local taxi associations and was received by the schools at Silverton Park on Friday.
The event was attended by legendary singer Dr Nothembi Mkhwebane, members of Mamelodi Amalgamated Taxi Association (Mata), Mamelodi local and long-distance taxi association (MALLDTA) and Federation of local and long-distance taxi association (FELLDTA) and 4 plus 1 taxi association.
Principal of Moretele Primary school, Johannes Legodi said the donations came at the right time and was happy his school was chosen to get school uniforms.
“These donations are very important for these children who do not have school shoes and uniforms,” said Legodi.
Trevor Matlala, the principal of Sediba Sa Thuto primary school, said his school faced lots of challenges because they have many children from poor backgrounds who don’t have any uniforms.
“The uniforms will boost the learners’ confidence and help them concentrate on their schoolwork,” said Matlala.
Learners from both Moretele and Sediba Sa Thuto primary schools were happy to have new school uniforms and bags.
The full school uniforms included shirts, tunics, socks, jerseys, trousers and shoes. The taxi association also treated the learners to some lunch meals from McDonald’s.
Chairman of Mata, Ben Maredi, said the donations were part of giving back to the community and schoolchildren “because they are the ones that support the association”.
“Community members use our public transport every day and these donations are a way of giving back to our loyal customers.
“It feels good to see children smiling and boosting the children’s confidence because they are now no longer be ashamed to come to school with torn school shoes or uniforms,” said Maredi.
Maredi added that it does not end here.
“We will continue to help at our local schools as well as old age homes and disability homes in Mamelodi.”
