Moot family loses everything in house fire

"There were things in the house that we can’t replace. Emotionally, it has been tough on us as a family, especially for our two children, aged three and seven."

The Moot community in Pretoria are banding together to help a family from Moulton Avenue in Waverley who lost most of their belongings in a house fire on Tuesday.

Marli Marx said that she was at work at the time when a fire broke out at around noon.

“My father was the one who first noticed that the house was on fire. He saw smoke coming out of the roof of the kitchen and living room,” she said.

Marx received a phone call from her father who said that she immediately had to phone emergency services to extinguish the fire.

“I rushed home as my father was struggling to open the front door. I had no time to gather necessary items, but luckily I was able to get the dogs out in time,” she said.

Marx added that it’s tough as they lost their home of seven years.

“There are things in there that we can’t replace. Emotionally, it has been tough on us as a family, especially for our two children, aged three and seven.

“My husband and I, Steven, are just relieved that our children were still at school at the time of the fire.

“We have a full-time domestic worker, but she left to visit her family. We are thankful that nobody was seriously injured,” she said.

Marx said that it was devastating to stand outside in the street and see their home go up in flames.

“We lost most of our belongings. Although the fire didn’t spread to our bedrooms, all the walls are covered with smoke. We have moved to another house temporarily until we have everything in place to start rebuilding our home,” she said.

The family asked the community for any donations such as clothes, kitchenware as well as curtains and bedding.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

“The incident was reported at around 12:10 when firefighters arrived on the scene.

“They found a house fully engulfed with fire with smoke coming out of the roof. They initiated firefighting and managed to extinguish the tin-roofed house,” he said.
