Mams host skate board competition

The Mamelodi Skate Club collaborated with Perfect Weather foundation and the private sector to host the “Rep Your Hood” tournament on June 4.
The skateboarding training was held at Rethabile sports ground at 09:00. Organiser and club member Poelo Mofolo said the event was not about competing but rather introducing skateboarding to Mamelodi. He said they taught children how to skate, skateboarding safety and other life skills.
He said skateboarding can change lives and exposes participants to a lot of good things.
“Skateboarding is also a sports career and one can participate in the Olympics for their country,” said Mofolo.

Mofolo encouraged Mamelodi children who would like to skate but didn’t have boards to join the club.
“Our club has benefits and we can give beginners boards and teach them how to skate,” he said.
He said the club is trying to secure land from the City of Tshwane to build a skate park and a multipurpose centre in Mamelodi to benefit local children. He said participants were awarded Puma and Sportscene vouchers while the winner will represent Mamelodi and other townships such as Alex, Soweto, Vaal and Kagiso soon,” said Poelo.
He said club members met in the park at Mamelodi Beer Hall next to the Mamelodi police station.

Mofolo said children in townships are vulnerable to various factors and therefore susceptible to sub-optimal and unhealthy child development. He said the club’s mission is to offer children a public space they can claim as their own, to create a sense of belonging as well as demonstrate the value of playful learning to empower them to take initiative in their own lives.
He said he wants to work closely with schools and the community at large on issues that affected the youth.
