One killed in N1 crash

The driver of the SUV was declared dead on arrival, while the passenger suffered minor injuries only.”

One person has been killed in a fatal accident on the N1 near the John Vorster off-ramp.

Kyle van Reenen of emergency services, Emer-G-Med, said paramedics responded to the scene where a heavy-duty vehicle and an SUV collided just after 02:00 on Wednesday morning.

“Reports from the scene are that a heavy-duty vehicle and an SUV had collided, left the roadway, overturned then crashed into a steel support structure,” said van Reenen.

“The driver of the SUV sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead by the paramedics, while the passenger suffered minor injuries only.”

Van Reenen said motorists should be extra careful when driving at night or early in the morning.

The Automobile Association (AA) said it is important to understand how to better drive in dark conditions.

“Firstly, and most importantly, anyone who suspects they have problems seeing at night should consult a doctor or optometrist to get their eyesight checked,” they said.

“Be honest with yourself as this is about safety.

“Equally important, anyone who needs prescription spectacles to drive must ensure they wear them, especially in low light conditions.

“Don’t let vanity outweigh safety – it’s not worth it.”

When driving at night use these safety tips:
– Have a clear route planned.
– Ensure your headlights and brake lights are in working order.
– If towing, make sure the brake lights and indicators are connected properly and functioning well.
– Keep rear and front windscreens clean and make sure your defogger is working.
– Avoid keeping your gaze focused at a single distance, as this can cause eye fatigue.
– Turn your headlights on before sunset and keep them on after sunrise.
– Don’t blind other motorists with your headlights.
– Maintain a safe following distance.
– Drive slower at night.
– Ensure you are well rested before getting behind the wheel at night.
