Police locate car hijacked in Lyttelton three years ago

Police nabbed three men found in possession of a car reported hijacked in 2019.

Three years after a Nissan NP200 was hijacked in Lyttelton, police finally traced it to suspects, seized it and arrested them.

According to police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe, police in the Moot received information on Wednesday, June 29, about a suspicious white Nissan NP200 driving towards Gezina.

Selepe said the officers spotted the car in Gezina on the corner of Jacobs Street and Johan Heyns Drive.

She said the car was stopped and searched.

She said though the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the car had been tampered with, it was established the car was “hijacked in Lyttelton, Centurion, in September 2019”.

Three men, aged between 24 and 47, in the car were arrested and were expected to appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle.

In a separate incident, police arrested two men found in possession of a stolen truck in Gezina on Wednesday, June 29.

Selepe said Pretoria Moot crime prevention officers pulled over a suspicious white Hyundai truck during a stop-and-search operation on Ben Swart Avenue.

“Upon investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle was reported hijacked in Mabopane in March 2020,” she said.

“The two suspects found in the car were detained and will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.”

Pretoria Moot police station commander Colonel Hlengeni Giben Mashaba applauded the members for their vigilance and alertness during their work.

Mashaba warned vehicle theft syndicates that the police will continue to deploy officers on random days in stop-and-search operations to thwart them.
