Two gunned down in Phomolong taxi rank
"It is alleged that two unknown men came to the taxi rank and started shooting, leaving two people dead."
Tshwane was wracked by violence the past four days as five people were shot and killed at taxi ranks in two unrelated incidents.
In the first incident, police are investigating two cases of murder after two men were shot and killed at the Phomolong taxi rank in Atteridgeville on Wednesday morning.
Two unknown men allegedly came to the taxi rank and began shooting, leaving two people dead, said Colonel Dimakatso Sello.
Sello said the victims, aged 21 and 35, were declared dead on the scene.
“The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage.”
Sello urged the community to come forth with any information that can assist with the investigation by reporting anonymously on the Crime Stop Hotline at 08600 10111 or on MySAPS App. All information will be treated confidentially.
In the second incident, police are also looking for suspects in the killing of three people at the Itereleng taxi rank in Laudium on Sunday evening.
Laudium police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said the police received a call that three people had been murdered at the entrance to the Itereleng squatter camp taxi rank.
She said a 25-year-old was found dead near the community office, while the 29 and 33-year-olds were found inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds.
“The three victims were declared dead on the scene. The motive is unknown at this stage,” she said.
“Police are appealing to the public with information that can assist the investigation and apprehension of the suspects to contact their nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”
In May, the chairperson of Atteridgeville Saulsville Taxi Owners Association (ASTOA) Thapedi Frank Moremi (69) was gunned down in his office at the Mphalane taxi tank.
Tshwane roads and transport MMC Dikedi Selowa described Moremi as one of the most hard-working and dedicated leaders in the local taxi industry.
“I wish to add my voice in condemning the recent killings in the taxi industry, which have now claimed Moremi’s life.
“He was instrumental in ensuring conflict-free taxi operations at ASTOA and the Greater Tshwane Regional Taxi Council (GTRTC).
“His passing is a great loss; not only to his family and the taxi industry, but to the public transport fraternity and the community at large.”
