North residents give their time, money to keep others warm this winter

The secret scarf shhh campaign was launched nationally on July 6

A local group of knitting volunteers want to brighten up South Africans’ lives by putting thousands of bright and cuddly scarves on display in parks, schools, malls and hospitals – all with a message of love attached.

This was as KnitWits in Pretoria North took part in the national secret scarf shhh campaign at the Sinoville Crisis Centre on July 6.

The campaign is by the global movement 67 Blankets for Mandela Day.

In preparation for Mandela Day, 25 volunteers from the Sinoville SAPS, Sinoville Crisis Centre and 67 blankets for Mandela Day used their knitting needles to stitch 141 scarves, 43 beanies, seven ponchos and five baby jerseys.

“It is phenomenal to see that they could get so many people to contribute in only two days with the help of Colleen Strauss [of the centre] and Sinoville ward 50 councillor Lenise Breytenbach,” said Octavia Ephraim.

Ephraim is an ambassador for 67 Blankets for Mandela Day in Montana.

“After being appointed as the ambassador, the challenge seemed huge but I had an amazing team who jumped on board and will continue to work with me to knit the country together.”

The volunteers brought their own wool for the benefit of the various places of safety in the area.

Lieutenant Colonel Alet Pratt of the Sinoville SAPS thanked the centre and all community members who participated.
