20 suspects arrested in weekend police operation

A man was arrested on Friday for being in possession of a homemade pistol and ammunition.

Police in Tshwane arrested 20 people, aged between 21 and 53, for various crimes during a recent Vhuthu Hawe operation.

The suspects were nabbed for theft, shoplifting, drunk driving and the possession of drugs, according to police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise.

“On Friday, we arrested a man after he was found with a homemade pistol,” he said.

“The pistol had two live rounds of ammunition and he was also found with R5 ammunition.”

On the following day, police spotted a suspicious black VW Polo at about 03:10.

Nkhumise said the car was stopped at the corner of Prinsloo Street and Church Street in the CBD and it was found with five men inside it.

“A pistol was found in the car during a search, but the suspects could not account for it,” he said.

“All five men were interrogated and taken to the Pretoria Central SAPS for detention.”

Later that morning at around 11:00, police received a tip-off about two men who were spotted with firearms.

Nkhumise said the two were spotted at the corner of Queen and Madiba streets in the CBD.

He said when the suspects noticed that police were on them, they ran into a minibus taxi and attempted to flee but the police managed to apprehend them.

Station commander Brigadier MM Dladla welcomed the arrests and said he was very pleased with the work that the police have been doing over the past month.

Dladla acknowledged that a lot still needs to be done to minimise crimes in the city.

He urged community members to report any criminal activity to the Pretoria Central police.
