Boy (11) in a stable condition after suffering sudden cardiac arrest

The learner is currently in a Johannesburg hospital where he had to undergo surgery.

An 11-year-old learner from Laerskool Generaal Nicolaas Smit in Hercules in the west of Pretoria is in a stable condition after he went into cardiac arrest on the school grounds on Friday morning.

Best Care emergency services were called to the scene around 09:45.

Spokesperson Xander Loubser said that the boy was revived and safely transported to a hospital.

“The learner was initially admitted to Life Eugene Marais hospital,” Loubser said.

According to a statement issued by the school, the learner was on his way to the bathroom when he suddenly collapsed.

“Teachers were immediately on the scene and first aid was performed. Medical services arrived on the scene within minutes. We would like to thank our educators who were thorough and calm during the situation,” the statement read.

“Thank you to the Best Care team for their exceptional service. We would like to convey the importance of first aid training for all educators at school as this was a critical situation.”
