Rietgat SAPS arrest two men after a chase and shots fired

The chase came to a halt near a funeral parlour in Block BB when the driver was shot.

A high-speed car chase involving Rietgat police and two suspects in a black BMW 320 sedan came to an end when one of them was shot near a funeral parlour in Block BB at midday on July 25.

The two men were arrested.

They were reported to be brandishing a firearm at members of the public near the Mabopane station through the window of their BMW.

When police officers tried to intercept the vehicle after spotting the incident, the duo sped away.

A chase through the streets ensued resulting in the police firing warning shots whilst in pursuit.

The men maintained their high speed, driving erratically despite the efforts of the SAPS to stop the chase.

One of the men is believed to also have pointed the weapon at officers but did not discharge it.

The chase came to a halt near the funeral parlour and the driver was shot in the waist.

The men were then taken into custody and police recovered an illegal firearm along with illegal ammunition in the vehicle. The driver was transported to Dr George Mukhari hospital for medical care under police guard.

Rietgat SAPS acting station commander Colonel Dinah Tabane commended her fellow officers for their bravery in executing their duty and removing another illegal firearm from the streets.

“Removing a firearm from the street is a victory for the police and I applaud the officers for making sure that yet another life is saved by recovering the firearm. Thank you,” said Tabane.

The men have been charged with attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm as well as ammunition.

They are expected to appear in the Soshanguve magistrate’s court soon.
