Mams residents forced to stay indoors as sewerage flows down their street
“We are forced to stay indoors and the streets are flooding as well.”
Two families in Mamelodi East extension 6 have accused the Tshwane metro of dragging its feet after they reported a blocked sewer last week Friday.
They claimed that they first reported the sewerage on Friday morning after it got blocked on Thursday before flooding the neighbour’s yard and flooding Mohwelere Street.
Morongwa Moloya said the problem emanated from her neighbour’s yard.
“It’s so bad now that the sewerage is damaging my brick wall and flooding my yard,” she said.

Moloya said she has dogs in her yard and the sewer has flooded where the dogs were staying and she is unable to clean her yard.
“The municipal officials in Mamelodi have since promised to send municipal workers to come and fix the blocked sewer,” said Moloya.
“Our health is at risk, including the tenants staying in our neighbour’s yard and the health of our dogs from inhaling the bad stench for about seven days now,” said Moloya.
“All we are asking the metro to do for us is to permanently fix the problem and respond quickly to complaints like this,” said Moloya.
“We can’t go outside the house or open windows because of the smell. We are unable to feed the dogs or clean where they are staying.
“The situation is getting worse day by day and we cannot go on like this.
Moloya said the streets were flooding as well.
“We have small children playing in the streets while we make sure to pay for service delivery every month.”

Moloya said that they have phoned the metro several times since the blockage began – and no one has shown up as yet.
A resident, who did not want to be named, said that if the metro officials responded timeously the damage would have been minimal.
“We are unable to use the toilet outside and we have to ask neighbours to use their outside toilets instead.”
Both neighbours are still waiting for municipal workers to come unblock as well as clean the yard.
The metro has not commented at the time of going to press.
