Motorist finally ‘allowed’ to renew licence disc
This was as a vehicle reported stolen in Pretoria in 2021 had been using the cloned personal information of a motorist, who was unable to renew her vehicle particulars with the transport department.
A motorist had to ask for AfriForum’s help after she struggled for months to get her car’s licence disc renewed.
The motorist, who preferred to remain anonymous, has struggled to renew the licence since February.
“The traffic department had told the motorist that her vehicle was registered to someone else,” said AfriForum campaigns manager Jacques Broodryk.
He said that the department advised the motorist not to use the vehicle in her possession until the matter was resolved.
Six months later, AfriForum received information that the other vehicle was in KwaZulu-Natal.
“We asked our local security structures and Alpha Security to locate the vehicle in KwaZulu-Natal.”
Broodryk said AfriForum neighbourhood watch in Hluhluwe and Alpha Security located the car within hours.
“The local police were notified and the vehicle was impounded.”
He said it was discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen in Pretoria in 2021.
He said it was common for criminals to re-register a stolen vehicle using the information of a similar, legally registered car they found on the traffic department database.
“The stolen vehicle is then used as if it was never stolen.”
The motorist thanked AfriForum for making it possible for her to renew her licence disc.
“Without your help, I would probably never be able to renew my car’s licence again, and I would fear arrest every time I use the car.”
